The release of Cam Meekins’s latest album, : ) :/ : (, was enough to crash the 19-year old Boston rapper’s website, and for good reason too. The highly anticipated album shows off Cam’s versatility and extensive growth as an artist. : ) :/ : ( proves to its listeners that Cam is not just a sick rapper, but a talented producer (Cam produced just about every song on the album) and singer. Save for the party anthem, #fuckyobitch, the album is free of the more pop-inspired beats that Cam used to work with on his earlier projects. Cam seems to have realized his identity as an artist and is delving right in with tracks like “Two Roads” and “Maggie”; Cam’s honest and relatable lyrics and message showcased in the songs pervade the rest of the album as well. For more on the album, check out our interview with Cam here.

John Mayer released his latest album, Born and Raised, yesterday. The album delves further into the country and folk genres (or is, according to iTunes, “a set of organic cowboy songs dreamed up under a starry night sky”). Mayer is known for experimenting with diverse genres, and given his extreme talent with a guitar and in songwriting, I was slightly disappointed by this album. There’s no doubt his musicianship is present on the release, but I found many of the songs rather typically pop, lacking in the dynamism Mayer could have brought to the genre. That said, “Queen of California” and “Whiskey, Whiskey, Whiskey” are extremely strong tracks, and the album as a whole is yet another reminder of how damn talented Mayer is.

This album reveals Mayer’s progression as a person as well as an artist. His days of bold statements and Playboy interviews are apparently over, and the lyrics in Born and Raised reflect an apologetic man. Mayer said in an interview, “I completely lost sight of what the original plan was, which is [to] make music for anybody who wants to hear it. There was a part of me that was dead — a certain thoughtfulness that was gone.”

Mayer won’t be touring for this album, which means he’s headed straight back into the studio to begin work on the next project.

Here’s the video for the album’s first single, “Shadow Days”.

Fun fact: “Hurricane” is MS MR’s first single. The indie/pop/rock/alt track feels ambient and other-worldly while simultaneously featuring a driving beat and powerful, emotive leading vocals. I’m so excited to hear more from this group. They’re touring this summer, opening up for the amazing Marina and the Diamonds.

You can download the single at their website.

“Marianne” is the latest from Chicago based indie-pop band California Wives. The band was recently signed to Vagrant Records and are currently working on their debut album for the label. While the release date and title of the album are still unknown, “Marianne” is a taste of what’s to come.

In addition to performing at Bamboozle today, Cam Meekins just released the video for “#fuckyobitch”, which is on his album : ) :/ : ( due out May 21st. The video, produced by Decriminals,  has some crazy visuals, warranting a seizure warning at the beginning. If you needed another reason to be hyped for : ) :/ : (, well, here you go.

The grammar nerd in me is squealing with delight at Mac Lethal’s new song/video, “You’re vs. Your”, in which the fast-spitting rapper breaks down the difference between the two words. He also calls out the idiocy of people who use them interchangeably (I see you, everyone who grew up using MySpace). If you haven’t seen this guy rap before (he’s known for rapping while making pancakes), he’s insane. Possibly the fastest-spitting rapper I’ve ever heard.

Sorry for the lack of posts this past week, we had finals and moving back home to deal with, but that’s over now! Anyways, here’s a really quick roundup of what came out during the week. We’ll be back to posting regularly, so be on the look out!

Justin Jones released his new album “Fading Light”. You can purchase the album here.

The official video for Caleb James ft. Nico Segal — “Freddie”, which we posted here, was released.

John Mayer is streaming his new album “Born and Raised”, in it’s entirety, on Itunes. Check it out before it releases on the 22nd.

Childish Gambino and newcomer ScHoolboy Q came together on “Unnecessary”. The track, with an almost sinister beat and Glover’s signature high energy flow, is definitely worth a listen.

Chicago based MC, Chance The Rapper, dropped the visuals for “Hey Ma”, a track off his album 10 Day, which you can download for free here.

Brenton Duvall released a new remix today, taking The Knocks ft. Kardinal Offishall’s “All We Got” and bringing in One Room to create his own take on the song. Download it here.

At 3pm today on thissongissick, OnCue (perhaps better known as Cuey) dropped the visuals for his song “Rich Kid”, produced by Brenton Duvall and CJ Luzi. The video is simple, deviating from black and white only during the chorus, and even offers a preview of Cuey’s next visual release (for his song “New Religion”). Check it out below.

Cuey, a native of Harford, Connecticut, creates a sound influenced by the hip hop and rock he grew up with. In an interview with Sunset in the Rearview, he described his sound as “Honest music. Emotional music. Soul music. I love real personal music, I hope my fans and listeners can tell. I like true, raw emotion, and I try to convey that with every record I do. Whether it’s depressing, or it’s about drinking, I love to take very mundane things and make them seem interesting, like a lot of indie rockers tend to do nowadays.”

Cam released an exclusive song with Fresh New Tracks today; this time it’s his own personal take on Purity Ring’s “Obedear”. Purity Ring’s beat gives the song a darker and slightly whimsical tone, while Cam’s vocals work to ground the track, contrasting with Purity Ring’s ethereal sound. Check it out below, and get ready for  Cam’s new album, : ) :/ : ( , which drops in two weeks.
